Illinois women’s track and field wins 2 event titles at the Tiger Track Classic

Going up against a strong field of teams, including Auburn, Iowa State and North Carolina State among others, the Illinois women’s track and field team held its own, finishing with two event titles and five top-five finishes at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn, Ala. Several different athletes recorded personal-best times.

Leading the way for the Illini in events on the track was junior Alyssa Schneider and sophomore Britten Petrey. Both won event titles in their races.

Petrey won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10 minutes and 54.98 seconds. After winning the 3,000 steeplechase last weekend at the Arizona State Invitational, Petrey has now won the event in consecutive meets, something no other Illini athlete has accomplished in this young outdoor season.

Schneider won the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:29.45. Her performance is the fifth-fastest time in school history. This is the second week in a row that Schneider has altered the program’s record books. Last weekend, Schneider placed second in the 1,500 meter at Arizona State.

Another notable performance the Illini received in the 3,000 was that of sophomore Amanda Fox. Fox finished fourth in the event with a time of 9:58.60.

Wrapping up the scoring for the Illini in events on the track, the 4×400 meter relay team of Chloe Schmidt, Nicole Choquette, Kymbriona Taylor, and Asia Thomas finished sixth in the last event of the weekend.

Kandie Bloch-Jones and Kristen Wilson led the way for the Illini in the field events. Bloch-Jones finished seventh in the high jump with a height of five feet, five inches, while Wilson took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, five inches.

Samone Thompson recorded a personal-best mark of 18 feet, 3/4 inches in the long jump.
