Shopping for last-minute dorm essentials
August 12, 2016
All moved into your dorm but realized you forgot some of the essentials? Fear not – there are plenty of spots in town to pick up some of the stuff you missed.
Some of these stores may be a little hectic around move-in time, but they’ll get the job done. Plus, they’re all easily accessible by bus. Even if your parents’ departure leaves you scrambling to find a ride, you’ll still be able to get all of the move-in must-haves that you may have forgotten.
Walgreens and CVS
407 E. Green St., Champaign, IL and 107 W. Green St.
Both located on the bustling Green Street just a few blocks away from the heart of campus, Walgreens and CVS are both easily accessible via the 50 W Green bus that stops at the Union. Although they won’t carry your bigger essentials, their proximity to campus make them good options for picking up smaller necessities or snacks for your mini fridge.

In the first couple weeks of school, you’ll still be excited about all of the dining hall options, but it’s nice to have some snacks in your room when people come over for a movie night.
Walgreens and CVS will also print photos at a very reasonable price, so if you want to decorate your room with pictures of friends, family and your dog, prints can be ordered online and picked up at either location.
Target and Walmart
2102 N. Prospect Ave., Champaign and 2610 N. Prospect Ave., Champaign
The red or yellow buses will take you to Target and Walmart in Champaign – just show your I-card when you get on the bus and you’re good to go. Target gets particularly hectic at the start of the semester and is known to have some items run out of stock. But Walmart is just around the corner in case you can’t find what you need at Target.
There are two other Walmarts in the area – one in Savoy (505 S. Dunlap St.) and one in Urbana (100 S. High Cross Road) that are both also accessible by bus, but the Champaign Walmart’s proximity to other big stores make it your best bet.
Both of these stores will carry groceries, furniture and personal products, so you can limit yourself to one stop, regardless of whether you are shopping for shampoo or a desk lamp.
Most large stores near campus will have a specific area of dorm essentials on top of the regular school supplies section. Be sure to check those out for affordable sheets, decorations and storage units.
Best Buy
2117 N. Prospect Ave., Champaign
Best Buy is your best option for your last-minute tech needs. Also accessible via the red or yellow buses, Best Buy is just across the street from Target and right around the corner from Wal-Mart, so it’s easy to hit them all up in one trip.
Best Buy’s staff is very willing to work with you to find the computer, printer or other item that will best fit your situation in the dorms.
Happy move-in.
