Taylor Swift makes history, women dominate 66th Grammy Awards

The 66th Annual Grammy Awards took place Sunday night, celebrating accomplishments in the world of music in 2023. Hosted by Trevor Noah, the night saw many historic moments, despite the area of the venue being under a flash flood warning during the ceremony.

As a “Year of Women,” the 2024 Grammy nominations saw a dominant representation of female musicians. Noah acknowledged this in his opening monologue, stating that seven out of eight nominees for album of the year were women, with some categories such as Best Pop Solo Performance consisting entirely of female artists.

Increasing female representation further, SZA was the most nominated artist of the night with nine nominations including Album of the Year, Best Song, Best Record and Best R&B Performance.

Notable moments of the ceremony included Miley Cyrus’s performance of “Flowers” for the first time on television — right after winning her first—ever Grammy Award — and Billy Joel’s first performance in 30 years with his new single “Turn the Lights Back On.”

After winning Best Pop Vocal Album with her album “Midnights,” superstar Taylor Swift took the opportunity to announce that her next album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” will be released on April 19.

Swift made history by winning Album of the Year, making her the only artist to win the award four times. Swift was previously tied for the record with Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon, each having three wins.

The ceremony’s controversial history also resurfaced throughout the night. As rapper Jay Z stepped on stage to accept the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award, he directly called out the Academy’s unpopular past selections.

“I don’t wanna embarrass this young lady, but she has more Grammys than everyone and has never won album of the year,” Jay Z said referring to his wife, Beyoncé. “Think about that … your own metrics don’t add up.”

Listed below is every nominee and winner of the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Maaike Niekerk, Arts & Entertainment Editor
My name is Maaike Niekerk, and I am a sophomore majoring in English with minors in music and journalism. I began working with The Daily Illini during the fall semester of my freshman year as a buzz staff writer, and joined the editorial team last summer. I love bringing live event coverage to you from Champaign-Urbana’s vibrant music scene and sharing stories of local artists and musicians. Outside of The Daily Illini, you’ll find me performing at every football game with the Marching Illini or cycling with the 2024 Illini 4000 bike America team.
