The Daily Illini COVID-19 updates for April 22

A man in his 90s with underlying health conditions is the fifth Champaign County resident to die from COVID-19, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District announced Wednesday.

CUPHD confirmed two additional coronavirus cases on Wednesday. Of Champaign County’s 98 cases, 14 are active, 79 have recovered and five have died. Six people with active cases are currently hospitalized.

Illinois had its largest single-day surge in coronavirus cases since the outbreak began, with state officials confirming 2,049 new cases on Wednesday. Gov. J.B. Pritzker attributed the surge to an increase in testing; over 9,300 coronavirus tests were administered in Illinois in the last 24 hours.
