The Daily Illini COVID-19 updates for April 29: Illinois surpasses 50,000 total cases

By Ethan Simmons, News Editor

Illinois has surpassed 50,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Wednesday.

For the sixth time in the last seven days, Illinois has surpassed 2,000 new state cases of the coronavirus.

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District announced 10 more cases of the coronavirus in Champaign County on Wednesday, pushing the countywide total to 124 cases.

Of the 124 cases, 32 are active, 86 have recovered and six have died. Six people with active cases are currently hospitalized. Less than 5% of Champaign County’s 2,869 tests have proved positive.

County health officials recommend anyone with symptoms — fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, fatigue and loss of taste or smell — to get tested.
