The Daily Illini COVID-19 updates for April 16

The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District announced one new case of the coronavirus in Champaign County on Thursday. Another 76 people have been tested for the virus, upping the county total to 1,714 tests.

Of the 91 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus in Champaign County, 31 have active cases, 56 have recovered and four have died. Six people with active cases are currently hospitalized.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has formed a coalition with the governors of six other Midwest states — Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin — to coordinate the easing of their stay-at-home orders and reopening of their economies.

Pritzker said all Illinoisans can now get tested for the coronavirus if they’re showing symptoms. Previously, people needed doctor’s orders to get tested.

Thursday was Illinois’ deadliest day from the coronavirus yet, with 125 newly reported deaths. The previous high was 82 deaths on April 8.

President Trump outlined a three-phase plan for states to reopen their economies, ceding control to state governors. Trump said governors can begin reopening restaurants, businesses and other institutions by May 1 or earlier, depending on the states’ assessments.

Twenty-two million Americans have filed for unemployment benefits in the last four weeks, with 5.2 million applying Thursday. The government’s $349 billion small business loan program has run out of funds.
