ISS swears in new members

By Michael Logli

The Illinois Student Senate inducted newly elected board members on Wednesday. After Justin Randall, junior in LAS, was sworn in as president, he swore in the rest of the board and educated the new senators on senate protocol. Former senate president Ryan Ruzic, senior in LAS, said he is happy for Randall but that he has bittersweet feelings about leaving.

“Student government has been a huge part of my life,” Ruzic said. “I’m going to miss it, but I’m ready to move on.”

Student trustee-elect Chime Asonye, junior in LAS, thanked the Senate for their support during his campaign. Asonye also said that in order to become student trustee next year, he is resigning the Senate position he was elected to in early March.

“I feel like this is 100 percent duty and dedication and I want to give other people the opportunity,” Asonye said.

Asonye also mentioned the importance of the State Higher Education Day in Springfield, Ill., on April 25. The Senate is sending representatives to this event to help lobby for increases in higher education funding.

“We are the best and brightest, so we need to support our generation,” Asonye said.

The Senate will try to arrange transportation to the event through the Treasury and Government Affairs committees. The money will come from the Senate’s budget.
