Larry Nassar, a former doctor for USA Gymnastics, was stabbed multiple times yesterday afternoon at a federal prison in Florida.
Nassar was also assaulted in 2018, shortly after he was imprisoned in Arizona. Nassar was then moved to a prison in Oklahoma before moving again to serve the rest of his sentence in Florida.
According to the Associated Press, the stabbing occurred during an altercation with another inmate. Nassar was stabbed multiple times in the chest and back. No other inmates were injured during the incident.
NPR was informed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons that Nassar’s identity was protected directly after the incident occurred due to certain privacy policies. The FBI was notified of the incident.
Despite initially being in critical condition, Nassar’s condition is stable as of Monday morning.

Nassar, a former sports doctor for Michigan State University and later USA Gymnastics, is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual conduct in 2018. Nassar is additionally serving a sentence for federal child pornography charges.
Nassar’s history of sexually abusing elite female gymnasts through the USA Gymnastics program became a part of an enormous scandal with USA Gymnastics.
The organization has been struggling to recover from the scandal, finally reaching a $380 million settlement with Nassar’s victims in 2021.
Survivors of Nassar’s abuse include world-renowned gymnasts Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, McKayla Maroney and Maggie Nichols.
Nassar will reportedly survive the incident and continue to serve his prison sentence.
