Trick-or-treating times established for CU, Campustown

Trick-or-treating hours will take place on Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m. throughout Champaign County, according to a statement distributed by the City of Champaign. This region includes the cities of Urbana and Champaign as well as parts of Campustown.

“If they live in a neighborhood, students might expect trick-or-treaters ringing their doorbells,” said Jeff Hamilton, communications manager at the City of Champaign. “Students might have visitors on Halloween from 6 to 8 p.m., especially if they turn their lights on. We are just making sure that everybody’s aware of that possibility.”

According to the statement, each year, the Champaign County Board is tasked with approving specific guidelines, rules and hours for the observance of Halloween. These guidelines are then provided to both Champaign and Urbana city governments.

The county’s guidelines historically state that Halloween trick-or-treating will always be held on Oct. 31, regardless of the day of the week, the statement said. The guidelines outline provisions for both weekday and weekend occurrences of the holiday.

The statement said that if Oct. 31 falls on a weekday during a given year, then trick-or-treat hours will be from 6-8 p.m. — as they are this year — and when Oct. 31 falls on a weekend, trick-or-treat hours will be from 5-7 p.m.

According to Hamilton, students are welcome to participate in trick-or-treating if they so choose.

There is no age limit on this,” Hamilton said. “So if the students wanted to go trick-or-treating, that’s their prerogative.”

Howdy! My name is Lisa, my game is delivering quality news to your phone screen, coffee table and recycling bin. Since fall 2022, I have had the honor of writing, editing and often-unsuccessfully pitching content for The Daily Illini. During my time at the 152-year-old news source, I have served as a reporter at our news desk, summer editor and assistant news editor. Most recently, after a rewarding year of bringing you hard-hitting stories such as “Uncut: Dissecting Circumcision” and “‘Surf’s Up’ could be the film of the summer,” I have taken over as managing editor for reporting. In my free time, you can find me performing open heart surgery in dark alleys, communicating telepathically with small woodland creatures and engaging in otherwise dubious activities.
