Women’s basketball downs Missouri State to advance to WNIT quarterfinals

The Illinois women’s basketball team defeated Missouri State, 65-53, on Thursday night to advance to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) quarterfinals.

The Illini led 29-23 at the half in Springfield, Mo., shooting 50 percent in the half and holding the Bears to just 25 percent from the field. Missouri State star guard Casey Garrison was held to four points in the first half.

Karisma Penn paced the Illini with 16 points. Penn also grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots. Senior Jenna Smith finished the night with 11 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and five blocks.

Illinois will face in-state foe Illinois State in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Normal, Ill.
