Illlini run, jump to wins

By Daniel Johnson

The Illinois women’s track and field team continued their winning ways over the weekend when they took part in the Indiana Invitational and the Meyo Invitational.

Highlights included Mariesa Greene taking the high jump with a provisional qualifying height of 1.81 meters. Not only did it qualify her, it was also her personal best, surpassing her former record of 1.70 meters. Greene was not the only one to excel at the Indiana Invite. Carlene and Camille Robinson each had an outstanding day.

Camille Robinson took the 400-meter with a time of 55.98 seconds and was closely tailed by Carlene who posted a time of 56.00 seconds. Carlene Robinson didn’t stop with that, however, as the Manchester, Jamaica native took the 600-meter as well, with a time of 1.35.12, also a provisional qualifying time.

LaNeisa Waller finished second in the 60-meter dash with a qualifying time of 8.40 seconds. Kristina Jones came in second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.28 meters.

Records were also set by Illini track athletes at the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Senior Stephanie Simms had a time of 16.39.71, six seconds better than her previous personal best in the 5,000 meters, and only seven seconds short of beating the school record.

Carlene Robinson’s 1.30.11 time in the 600-meter and Ashley Whittaker’s 12’08,25″ mark in pole vault both broke school records.

The Illini women will be headed to Arkansas next weekend for the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville.
