Champaign City Council to discuss renewal of honorary street names

Champaign City Council will discuss a proposal renewing the naming of Park Street as Honorary Roger Ebert Boulevard at their study session Tuesday.

After receiving a renewal request from the Champaign Park District, council members will discuss alternatives to renewing the street designation and the advantages and disadvantages that go along with it.

The two current signs required for designation are in good condition but need to be replaced within 10 years.

At least five council members must approve the renewal at Tuesday’s meeting for it to be discussed again next week, when the council can take a final vote.

In addition to this renewal request, two other honorary streets, Jim Turpin’s Penny Lane and Dike Eddleman Way, which were approved in 2002, are also expected to have renewal requests submitted in the near future.
