A Jarling’s Custard Cup worker hands a strawberry milkshake to customers in the afternoon on March 23. The shop is located at 309 W. Kirby Ave.

A Champaign staple loved by townies and Champaign-Urbana newcomers alike, Jarling’s Custard Cup has always done frozen sweet treats the best. Located just off campus on Kirby Avenue, the ice cream shop gives C-U the perfect small-town feel and is a mandatory trip for anyone new to the area.

The milkshake, a beloved dessert classic, is perfect for all times of year, and Jarling’s Custard Cup nails it every time. Mixed to perfection and great to drink alone or share with friends, the historic ice cream shop has now been voted C-U’s Best Milkshake for the second year in a row. The silky custard that has been perfected by the restaurant over decades makes for a truly one-of-a-kind milkshake.

Jarling’s Custard Cup’s Best Milkshake win represents only a small portion of the creamery’s beverage options, as it also offers floats, sleets, malts, old-fashioned sodas and more. With a wide range of flavors and sundae toppings to mix in, the custard stand mixes things up even more with a rotating “flavor of the week” that can be turned into a milkshake by request.

If you’re disappointed in the lack of ice cream spots on campus, the top milkshake stop in C-U is only a few blocks away. It’s a great place to take anyone for a taste of Champaign; its milkshakes are there for you with their top-tier texture and flavor, undeniably a great sweet treat to grab any time of year.
