The Main Quad on Feb. 29.

At the heart of campus, the Main Quad stands out with beautiful scenery and an iconic symbol of the University. The large, open and grassy area surrounded by different school buildings acts as a crossroad to get to class.

The Main Quad is bookended by the Illini Union and Foellinger Auditorium, the University’s largest lecture hall. As a result, the 10-minute periods before the next hour pack the area with students.

When the weather is nice, students love spending time at the Main Quad, to study, chat, nap, picnic or throw Frisbees. But the Main Quad exhibits different vibes by season.

In the summer, the Main Quad gets incredibly bright characterized by the cloudless, blue sky and the prickly green grass. During the fall, it gets even more charming as the leaves change colors and create a warm, vibrant environment. The winter sees a cold, empty and sometimes snow-covered winter wonderland. In springtime, the blossoming of trees and flowers creates a revitalizing quad.

As an important asset to the University, the beloved Main Quad was a shoo-in for this year’s Best Quad.
